Cafe Sessions with Steve: March 2023

Hello there, friends! As we gather for this Café Session, we find ourselves in the midst of March Madness. The official "Final Four" teams have been set, and while most of our brackets may be in shambles, the thrill of the tournament still lives on. Even if our favorite teams have been eliminated, there's still plenty to enjoy about the remaining games, and perhaps even a chance to win a little bit of cash on the side if you’re into any of the betting apps like Draft Kings or Fan Duel.

In addition to the excitement of March Madness, it's also worth noting that the weather is starting to turn, and the golf season is upon us! If you're a golf enthusiast like myself, you know that there's nothing quite like hitting the range on a sunny spring day, working on your swing and soaking up the fresh air. And even if you're not a golfer, there's still plenty to enjoy about the arrival of spring - the flowers blooming, the longer days, the overall feeling of renewal and growth, and the upcoming park days with friends…

So, let's take a moment to relax and enjoy each other's company as we dive into this latest café session where we are talking about coffee shop etiquette and how to load up your coffee with nutrients!

Before we delve into our first topic, I must admit that I had to consult Google to ensure that I spelled "etiquette" correctly. Fortunately, our discussion is not about grammar; instead, we'll be focusing on coffee shop etiquette! Let's be honest, we all adore coffee shops. They are the ideal places to socialize with friends, work on projects, or relax with a captivating book and a steaming cup of joe. However, it is crucial to keep in mind that there are certain norms to follow when ordering and when savoring your favorite beverage. In this brief guide, we'll cover the basics to help you make the most of your next coffee shop visit.

First and foremost, when you walk into a coffee shop, expect a warm welcome. If you're lucky, you might even hear a chorus of "hellos" from every employee on duty. But, if you find the shop is busy and the staff are multitasking, be patient and give them a moment to catch their breath. They want to provide you with excellent service, but sometimes they need a moment to reset after cranking out 25 lattes and cappuccinos in a row!

When you approach the register, have your order ready. Especially during peak times, it helps to know what you want before getting to the front of the line. But, if you're not sure what to order, don't be afraid to ask your barista for suggestions. Most shops will have a drink that's close to what you're looking for, even if it's not listed on the menu.

Once you've placed your order, just sit tight and wait for your name or drink to be called. And if you're planning to hang out for a while, feel free to ask if they'll bring your drink to your table.

Now let's talk about using the internet and other amenities that your coffee shop offers. If you plan to use a service provided by the coffee shop, it's always good etiquette to make a purchase first. Remember, nothing in life is truly free, and small businesses heavily rely on your patronage to stay afloat. By showing your support with a few dollars, you'll not only feel good about backing your local businesses, but you'll also help ensure that your favorite coffee shop remains open for years to come. After all, the last thing you want is to visit the place and find out it's no longer in business. So always remember to show your appreciation and support to keep your beloved coffee shops thriving.

Looking to give your morning cup of joe an extra boost? While a Bulletproof Coffee may be the most well-known way to give your coffee a little nutritional boost, there are plenty of other additions to consider that can help you avoid those pesky caffeine jitters or provide a unique nutritional boost. One of the most popular trends, particularly in Denver, is adding mushrooms to your coffee. But fear not, we're not talking about those "fun" mushrooms here. Instead, we're referring to varieties such as Lion's Mane, Reishi, or Cordyceps, which have recently gained attention for their potential superfood status and brain-boosting benefits.

While it may seem odd to add mushrooms to your morning brew, these distinctive fungi contain beneficial properties that can target different areas of your body, from your brain to your immune system. Plus, many of these mushroom powders now have delicious flavors that complement your coffee. Trust me, even if you're not a fan of the taste of mushrooms (like me; I pick then out of a stew if I find them), you will be pleasantly surprised by the results.

Another quick and easy addition to consider is CBD. While it may not have a discernible taste, CBD can provide its own unique benefits and is worth exploring. Many people add CBD to cold brews to help their body relax while their brain enjoys the caffeine boost we all love to start the day with.

Alongside the previous suggestions, you can also make your coffee more nutritious by adding a dash of cinnamon. Not only does cinnamon impart a delightful, warm flavor to your coffee, it also boasts anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that have been linked to lower blood sugar levels and improved heart health. Don't hesitate to sprinkle some cinnamon on top of your coffee for an extra boost of nutrition and flavor!

Next time you're sipping on your coffee, why not experiment with some new add-ins and see how they affect your morning routine? Who knows, you may discover a new favorite that helps you power through your day!
