# The Ghosts of Workplaces Past: Office Habits We Should Have Left Behind

by [Jade Cutler](https://blog.enterprisecoworking.com/author/jade-cutler) | Oct 3, 2026 | [denver coworking](https://blog.enterprisecoworking.com/tag/denver-coworking), [October 2026](https://blog.enterprisecoworking.com/tag/october-2026) | [0 Comments](https://blog.enterprisecoworking.com/the-ghosts-of-workplaces-past-office-habits-we-should-have-left-behind#comments-listing)

Some workplace traditions just won't stay buried. This Halloween, we're uncovering the outdated office habits that deserve a permanent resting place and exploring how modern workspaces are helping professionals work smarter, not harder.

Every office has its ghosts. No, we're not talking about mysterious noises coming from the conference room or the printer that seems to have a mind of its own (although we've all encountered that one).

We're talking about the workplace habits that continue to haunt us long after they should have disappeared.

From meetings that could have been emails to outdated expectations about when and where work happens, some office traditions have overstayed their welcome. And while a little nostalgia can be fun, not everything from the past deserves a comeback.

This Halloween, we're opening the workplace crypt to uncover a few professional practices that should have been laid to rest years ago.

#### **1. The Meeting That Wouldn't Die**

We've all been there. You sit through a 60-minute meeting, take a few notes, nod along, and walk away wondering what exactly was accomplished.

Even scarier? The meeting ends with everyone agreeing to schedule another meeting.

Unnecessary meetings are one of the most persistent ghosts of a workplace. While collaboration is essential, filling calendars with discussions that could have been handled through a quick email or shared document can drain productivity and leave little time for meaningful work.

Time to break the curse:

Before scheduling a meeting, ask yourself three questions:

- Does this conversation require real-time collaboration?
- Is there a clear agenda and desired outcome?
- Could the same information be communicated more efficiently?

If a meeting is necessary, keep it focused, invite only the people who need to be there, and leave everyone with clear next steps.

And when in-person collaboration really does make sense? Having access to a comfortable, professional meeting space can make those conversations much more productive.

#### **2. The Curse of the Rigid 9-to-5**

Once upon a time, the traditional workday was simple: arrive at 9, leave at 5, and spend every minute in between sitting at your assigned desk.

But today's professionals aren't all working from the same playbook.

Some people do their best thinking first thing in the morning. Others hit their creative stride in the afternoon. Entrepreneurs, freelancers, and remote workers often need schedules that accommodate clients, deadlines, and responsibilities beyond the office.

Yet the idea that productivity must happen within one rigid window continues to haunt workplaces everywhere.

Time to break the curse:

Focus on results rather than simply watching the clock.

Flexible work arrangements, when appropriate for the role, can give professionals more control over their schedules while maintaining accountability.

And flexibility doesn't have to mean working from your kitchen table every day. Modern coworking spaces offer a professional environment for people who want the structure of an office without being tied to a traditional workplace routine.

#### **3. The Approval Process From the Underworld**

You have a great idea. You've done the research. You're ready to move forward.

There's just one tiny problem.

Your proposal needs approval from your manager, their manager, another department, three people you've never met, and someone who appears to have been on vacation since 2019.

By the time everyone signs off, your brilliant idea has practically become a historical artifact.

Excessive approval processes can slow innovation, frustrate employees, and turn simple decisions into unnecessarily complicated projects.

Of course, some approvals are important, especially when budgets, legal requirements, or major business decisions are involved. But not every decision needs to travel through a maze of management.

Time to break the curse:

Give employees and teams clear decision-making authority. Establish guidelines for what genuinely requires approval and what can be handled independently.

When people understand their responsibilities and have the freedom to act, work can move forward without getting trapped in administrative limbo.

#### **4. The Zombie Open-Door Policy**

"My door is always open!"

It's a phrase we've heard from countless managers. And while it sounds welcoming, an open door doesn't always translate into open communication.

In some workplaces, employees are encouraged to share ideas and concerns, only to discover that their feedback disappears into a mysterious void.

An open-door policy without meaningful follow-through is a workplace zombie: it looks alive, but there's not much happening beneath the surface.

Time to break the curse:

Create opportunities for genuine, two-way communication.

That might mean regular check-ins, collaborative brainstorming sessions, or simply making time to listen and respond to feedback.

The goal isn't just to encourage employees to speak up. It's to create an environment where their ideas are valued and their concerns are taken seriously.

#### **5. The Haunted Cubicle of Isolation**

Picture this: fluorescent lighting, endless rows of identical cubicles, and the gentle hum of a printer somewhere in the distance.

For decades, this was the standard office experience.

While private workspaces certainly have their place, environments that keep everyone separated can make collaboration feel like an expedition into unknown territory.

Today's professionals often benefit from having options. Sometimes you need a quiet corner to concentrate. Other times, a conversation over coffee can spark your next big idea.

Time to break the curse:

Choose work environments that support different ways of working.

A thoughtfully designed coworking space can provide opportunities for focused work, casual conversations, professional networking, and team collaboration without forcing everyone into the same setup.

At Enterprise Coworking, we believe your workspace should help you do your best work, not hold you back.

#### **6. The Phantom of Always Being Available**

It's 8:47 p.m. Your phone buzzes.

A work email.

Then another.

And suddenly, you're answering questions about tomorrow's project while trying to enjoy your evening.

Somewhere along the way, being constantly connected became confused with being constantly productive.

But just because technology makes it possible to work around the clock doesn't mean everyone should.

Time to break the curse:

Establish clear expectations around communication and availability.

Encourage teams to respect personal time, use scheduled messages when appropriate, and distinguish between genuinely urgent requests and tasks that can wait until the next workday.

Creating healthy boundaries doesn't mean caring less about work. It means making room for the energy, focus, and creativity that help people perform well when they're working.

#### **7. The Never-Ending Notification Nightmare**

Ding. New email.

Buzz. Team message.

Ping. Calendar reminder.

Before you know it, you've spent half your morning responding to notifications and barely touched your actual to-do list.

The constant stream of digital interruptions has become one of the modern workplace's most persistent monsters.

According to [Microsoft's Work Trend Index research,](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/worklab/work-trend-index/breaking-down-infinite-workday) employees using Microsoft 365 experience an average of one interruption every two minutes during core work hours. That's a frightening amount of distraction!

Time to break the curse:

Try setting aside dedicated periods for focused work. Turn off nonessential notifications, establish communication expectations, and resist the temptation to respond to every message immediately.

Sometimes, the most productive thing you can do is simply give yourself permission to concentrate.

#### **Bury the Old Habits and Make Room for Better Workdays**

The workplace has changed dramatically over the years, but some outdated traditions are still lurking in the shadows.

The good news? We don't have to keep doing things just because that's how they've always been done.

Modern workplaces are increasingly focused on flexibility, collaboration, and creating environments where people can thrive. And sometimes, that starts with rethinking something as simple as where we work.

In fact, having different environments for different tasks can make a meaningful difference in how you approach your day.
